Art & Photography Music Accessories & Crafts

The Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, FL

Dali is without a doubt my favorite painter. I could look at any one of his pieces for hours and feel it had been time well spent. The museum in St. Petersburg, FL houses my favorite of his pieces: The Hallucinogenic Toreador and The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. Both are huge 20 foot tall pieces from Dali's Classic period after the 1940s. The entire collection of pieces from every era in his life is stunning. The museum itself is a beautiful, idyllic environment located on the bay at Poynter Park near the local college. Treat yourself with a visit. If you can't, check out the website anyway.

The Photography of Clyde Butcher

Dali is my favorite painter, but Clyde Butcher is my favorite photographer. I have always been a big fan of black& white photography. It's subtle and revealing, and very intimate. Clyde Butcher does for the Florida everglades and seacoast what Passel Adams did for the West. His use of light, and his compositions are masterful. He has two galleries in Florida. The Big Cypress Gallery is located in the everglades in Chopper, FL. He has a Venice, FL Gallery and studio as well. Check out the website and enjoy the striking beauty of Clyde's photography.

The Art of Judy Larson

I got turned onto Judy Larson's work at a shop in Blue Ridge, GA, The Massachusetts Bay Trading Company, that houses a lot of Native American arts & crafts. Judy's work is highly detailed drawing-paintings. She works on scratch board, a virtually ignored medium. She paints hidden pictures within a picture--the art of concealment. Her subject matter is Native American in nature. For instance, In her picture Medicine Crow, the main painting is of a horse. Inside the horse picture, she subtly draws the shaman Medicine Crow. Check out Judy's phenomenal work and let yourself get blown-away by the tremendous detail and the sensitivity to her subject matter.

The Art of Kevin Dyer

I got turned onto Kevin Dyer's work at the Decatur Arts Festival (in nearby Decatur, GA) in the Summer of 2003. Kevin paints his mystical visions on cast paper, a technique in which wet paper is pressed into a carved wax mold, essentially being sculpted up from its flat base. He creates magical Celtic and Native American pieces. Check out Kevin's unique, powerful work.

Aeoliah

Aeoliah's music seems to take the listener to a place of healing that is not of this world. It's almost as if his music was composed by angels, and then handed to him in manuscript form for him to simply sit and play. Angel Love 2 is out, and it carries on where the first one left off. This is a pretty neat website, with clips of Aeoliah's art in addition to many sound clips from his CDs. Enjoy the peace and high energy of his site.

Andreas Vollenweider

Andreas Vollenweider is still the master of musical wizardry. I saw him at an Atlanta doing a solo performace in Atlanta about four years ago. I was stunned as he walked around the stage picking up one stringed harp-like instrument after another, playing it with mastery I had never before encountered. Then he sat down at the piano. He did play the keys, and then switched to plucking its strings. I have never heard piano played like that before. Andreas is aware of the energy he spikes his music with. He is an enlightened advocate for peace and for spiritual awareness, and he offers his talents to the world to assist in opening human consciousness to higher levels. You can read articles and forums at his website, and also listen to his music. I'm sure you will agree with me that Andreas is part elf.

Ani Williams

Ani Williams brings a graceful peace to her harp music, and her vocals are other-worldly. Whether on a solo album, or working with Lisa Tiehl or Mazatl Galindo, Ani's music has a distinctive resonance evocative of a deep green forest. Ani has recently begun to work more directly with the healing vibrations of sound, and has developed a healing Cd and method called Songaia. The project relates color and sound to signs of the zodiac. You'll find Ani's latest CDs available on her website (and Songaia among them), but alas only one short cut from one of her CDs. Check out her website to get a glance at the intensely bright creative spark behind her music.

Bebel Gilberto

Long Live the Gilberto Dynasty! For those of you who are not familiar with the Gilberto Dynasty, I refer to the late Joao Gilberto who is one of the founders of Brazilian Bossa Nova Jazz. He and his first wife Astrud recorded The Girl From Impanema with Stan Getz back in the 60s, and put Bossa Nova on the map. Bebel is Joao's daughter by his second wife, the Brazilian singer Miucha. Bebel carries on the sultry, romantic sounds forged in Jazz by her father, and adds a flair of modern tempo uniquely her own. Check out Bebel's music. My favorite of her songs is Tanto Tempo, one of the smoothest and most sultry love songs in Latin Music. Enjoy!

Cesaria Evora

When I first heard Evora's music, I immediately thought she was either a Cuban singer-guitarist, or she was from some small island in the vicinity of the Lesser Antilles. Well, I got part of it right. The classification would be World Music (if you are into classifications), and Evora is from the Cape Verde archipelago, which is off the west coast of Africa. It was settled by the Portugese in the 1500s, but it also has a strong French influence. Cesaria is what is known as a Morna singer (one of the 3 or 4 musical traditions of Cape Verde, which has influences in both Latin and African rhythms) from the island of Sao Vicente in the Cape Verdes. Her music is salsa-like, meringue-like, Bossa Nova-like, and totally wonderful. And her website is also very wonderful, with lots of background information on her part of the world, and many sound clips. Check it out and become a really big fan too.

Constance Demby

I consider Constance Demby's music to be among the purest vibrations available in physical sound. She is one of the founders of the New Age Space Music genre, with CDs such as Novus Magnificat and Sacred Space Music. She is classically trained, a master of synthesizer orchestration, and a sound wizard. Her compositions are moving and inspiring. Check out the sample cuts on her website, and read about her latest projects. This woman's music can move energy.

Pat Metheny

Back when I was a young lass, I was overwhelmed by a wave of musical enthusiasm after I first heard Pat Metheny's music. I proceeded to convert all of my friends to the gospel of Pat. I'm still doing it. Although I prefer the sophisticated rhythms and beautiful melodies of his late 70s and 80s work, he never ceases to amaze me with his innovation and the depths he dives into in Jazz. He is one of the best guitar players in the world. Along with his keyboard playing counterpart, Lyle Mays, the music he has written is like that of no one else's in modern Jazz--romantic, innovative, melodious, complex, somber and exciting all at once. Check out the Pat Metheny Group website and discover the group's latest musical projects, and listen to some beautiful music (click on the "Special Features" button under the CD cover in the "CD" section of the page--it requires Windows Media Player).

Ancient Treasures

This site has it all: Egyptian statuary, Greek sculptures, Celtic Art, Oriental & Hindu art and sculptures, Goddesses, and Archangels. You can find some very obscure items on this site, and it offers links to museums where much of the art originates from. Check out the beautiful array.

Greek Town Imports

I came across this little shop on a trip to Tarpon Springs, FL awhile ago. Tarpon Springs has a large Greek community there, and you can tour that area and sample some Greek food and a bit of Greek culture. It's big fun. This little store, Gift World, is a family-owned business. They opened an online store in 1995. They have some great museum replicas from the Ancient Greek world, and some really beautiful Byzantine Icons that are quite potent. They also offer books and music from the Greek culture past and present.

Himalayas Import

I came across this little shop in the heart of Asheville, NC on a trip to the Smoky Mountains. This store is run by a husband and wife team--Manoj & Sushila Lama, from Nepal. They are total sweethearts. Check out their online store. They have some very powerful Tibetan singing bowls, awesome Tibetan art, wall-hangings, jewelry, clothing, and Buddha statuary--all imported from the Himalayas of India, Nepal, and Tibet.

Indian Arts & Crafts Association

If you want to stay true-to-form as far as Native American craftwork goes, this site will show you where to find the real thing, the artists, the stores, and the latest and greatest Native American arts & crafts. If you own a retail store, you can become an IACA member and find the very best work available (and get listed with the association while supporting the work).

Light Stones

This site offers a wholesale catalog as well as retail. It has gorgeous Kuan Yin and Buddha statuary (some of the most beautiful I have seen), fountains, crystals, books, Feng Shui and assorted accessories. The shipping and handling charges are easy to sort through, and the prices are reasonable. Shop 'til ya drop!

Nella Silverspear

I came across Nella Silverspear at a Body/Mind/Spirit Expo in Asheville, NC. She was showing people how to play Native American flutes at her booth. She makes these flutes herself, and customizes them in many instances according to the player. She inscribes them with sacred symbols, and carefully hones them to shape the sound and the tone. She is a true artist and a wonderful shaman. She also has created some beautiful drums. Check out her site for the full scope of this talented woman's work. She is located in Folsom, CA.

The Serene Scene

I also came across the founders of this site, Steve Story and Celia Bourez, at the Body/Mind/Spirit Expo in Asheville, NC. They are located in Fresno, CA. They are Sound & Color Therapists, and their site offers some amazing vibrational healing tools. They have some awesome crystal singing bowls, and they have recorded some sound CDs that are out of this world. Check out their merchandise.

Siamese Dream

This site offers very wonderful clothing, Buddha and Kuan Yin statues, beautiful jewelry and accessories, and some gorgeous silk lamps (which I just had to have). The prices are reasonable, and the ordering tools on the site are easy to use. They even have a very responsive customer service. You can talk to a live person on the phone if you have questions. Siamese Dream is a woman-owned business located in San Rafael, California.
